Antidepressants Have
Little or No Effect
On 26th February 2008, major media around the world like BBC, Time and CNN widely reported a significant research finding on the effect of antidepressants. This very new study jointly conducted by scholars in UK, USA and Canada reveals that antidepressants like ‘selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors’ (SSRIs) have no effect for most of patients who suffer from depression and might only have little effect for those who are very severely depressed. This peer-reviewed research was published in PLoSMedicine on 26th Febrary 2008.
The researchers reviewed 47 published and unpublished data on clinical trials submitted to US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) by pharmaceutical companies for the licensing of the drugs. They found that the drugs might show some positive effect on less severely depressed patients. However, the positive effect was not greater than the effect of placebo—a sugar-coated ‘dummy’ pill. This means that the drugs themselves actually have no medical use.
The research findings strongly support the claim made by our experts at the Process Centre. In the book The Triple Process Remedy: A New Philosophy on Illnesses of Stress, Anxiety and Depression, our experts pointed out that even the best medication of antidepressants has only a similar effect to placebo. What is worse is that those medications have serious side effects (see the book, p. 25). Our expert also confirmed that antidepressants may be a little useful for patients with severe anxiety and depression: ‘…for severe anxiety disorders, patients may take prescribed medications initially (but cautiously) within a relatively short period as a transition, to control serious symptoms’ (see the book, p. 116).
According to our experts, although they have discovered some big problems of modern medicines such as their ineffectiveness, the current mainstream medical researches still have severe limitations. For example, they are rarely going further to touch the fundamental question: Why are antidepressants not workable? Further related question would be: Why do modern medical scientists favour medications that are almost exclusively made of artificial chemical compounds, which always result in uncomfortable or even fatal side effects?
Our experts suggest that to answer the questions is not easy and one must review the entire medial theories and their underlying philosophy. The ineffectiveness of modern medications is in essence due to the flaws of modern medical theories and the philosophy behind them. Thus, a new philosophy is needed to replace the old unworkable one and to make the illness treatment more effective. The new philosophy is process thought. With process philosophy, it is far better to understand the fundamentals and mechanisms of human health and illness.
